Ocean Beach Entryway Projects Continue to Make Improvements:
April 2007 Update
The Entryway medians from Sea World Drive to Point Loma and Ocean Beach are going to get greener. OBCDC continues to raise funds for the installation of irrigation and landscaping according to the design completed and approved in recent years. The two small medians have donated palm trees that have been hand watered on weekends for over a year by OBCDC volunteer, President and Chair, Christopher Kern. Chris Kern is a resident of Ocean Beach and a VP at Union Bank of California and is the Committee Lead for many OBCDC improvement projects. OBCDC has been working on a variety of Entryway fund-raising projects, including the Gateway Park and Pathways connecting pedestrian, bicycle and ADA access from Sunset Cliffs Blvd. and W. Point Loma Blvd. to Robb Field and The San Diego River Park. As part of the Entryway fund-raising effort, funds were expended to install the irrigation for the palm trees with the assistance of Point Loma Landscape and very soon the palms will be automatically watered on a timer.
The health of the palms has been monitored closely, of late, because of the cold snap, extended dry spell and constant winds. Some of the Mexican Fan palms and Queen palms are looking a little brown around the edges. Professionals have been consulted and additional care is scheduled.
"We expect to be successful very soon in raising a good portion of the funds to complete irrigation and landscaping of the two smaller medians," said Curt Lutz, Executive Director of OBCDC. Approximately $20,000 is needed to finish the basic plan for the two small median irrigation and landscaping design. "The fact is, though, there is always a need to have community support for these projects, financially and politically," said Lutz. OBCDC has received many welcomed comments about the median improvements to date. The community has quite an interest in seeing this Entryway improved.
Individuals, organizations, and interested companies that would like to support the effort can contact Curt Lutz, OBCDC Executive Director, (contact us by email or by telephone at 224-1648). The Entryway Projects are also taking reservations for Tiles and Bricks with personal inscriptions to add to the pathway walls of the Gateway Park.
